Market Close: European stocks head south for the holidays
European markets are trading on a weaker footing amid a lack of any triggers. Closer home, UK stocks ended higher in a shortened trading session with the FTSE 100 index posting modest gains ahead of the Christmas holidays. The US futures are trading higher ahead of the market open today.

Update: Final profit target reached on Facebook

    Trader / TheSteadyTrader.com

My long-side trade idea in shares of Facebook (FB:xnas) has now reached my final upside target at $80.50, bringing the percentage gain for those that participated along to 4.50% for what as a very nice risk/reward trade that brought about some year-end cash-flow.

How Russia stopped the ruble's free-fall

    Bloomberg
On Monday and Tuesday of last week, the ruble was in the midst of a stunning collapse. Since then, however, the currency has stabilised somewhat, with USD trading near $55 (after shooting to $79 last week). According to Bloomberg's Leonid Bershidsky, Russia's interest rate hike as well as its behind-the-scenes moves to encourage large Russian companies to sell off their cash holdings are behind the currency's recovery. Moscow's ability to control the exchange rate through such manoeuvres is finite, and another sell-off could put Russia in a very difficult position.

Daily Shot: Ruble panic over... for now
The ruble has rallied almost 30% against the euro from the lows reached on December 15. The reason for the rally is the imposition of “informal” capital controls. Exporters who previously converted assets to hard currency in order to preserve cash were forced to sell their dollars and euros back into rubles.

Polar challenges for Russian oil in 2015
Russia oil firms and Gazprom might want to have each other's problems. Gazprom, arguably, has too much capacity and might be better off by cutting back on investments. The Russian oil industry, on the other hand, might struggle to maintain output while freezing capex in devalued rubles.

Xiaomi's smart-home concept a smart move for growth

    China Watcher / Shanghai
    China
Xiaomi has seen its reputation in the west grow dramatically as investors look for the next technology giant from China following Alibaba’s IPO. But Xiaomi is much more than just a smartphone manufacturer, and is building an ecosystem for the smart home concept. However, investors shouldn’t expect the firm to expand into the west in the near term, as intellectual property disputes would prevent this from happening.

3 Numbers: US mortgage puzzle, US jobless claims, US Treasury yields
Real estate transactions have tumbled in the US, despite low interest rates and signs of accelerated growth elsewhere in the economy, leaving economists confused. Some observers attribute the fall to consumer worries about stockmarket swings and rising home values. Also in the US, the outlook for payrolls is engouraging. And upbeat economic news is reviving the Treasury market’s inflation outlook.
