WCU: Oil and gold higher as shorts take cover
The commodity sector got a lift as the US dollar weakened further. Short-covering in energy and precious metals helped offset a sharp reversal in grains as recent weather concerns eased. Oil and gold recovered despite multiple headwinds, with the behaviour at key resistance above likely to determine the short-term direction of both commodities.

Yellen testimony: details not quite as dovish as initial headlines. One of the headlines plucked from the testimony in particular may have been one of the key reasons that the USD initially sold off after the release of Fed Chair Yellen's testimony, namely that "rates won't have to rise much further to get to neutral", but after this part of the testimony, we also see that "But because we also anticipate that the factors that are currently holding down the neutral rate will diminish somewhat over time, additional gradual rate hikes are likely to be appropriate over the next few years ....." Of course, the market can second guess the Fed's ability to forecast economic conditions, but this wording doesn't represent a dovish shift from the latest Fed policy forecasts, though the bond market reaction has been a bit sticky so far (yields notched lower).

As well, we have the long Yellen Q&A to look forward to, which will provide plenty more colour. Stay tuned.
