WCU: Energy leads commodities in bullish start to 2018 —#SaxoStrats
Demand for energy has got commodities off to a bullish start in the first full trading week of 2018. A weaker dollar and increased focus on inflation together with geopolitical risks were some of the main drivers of a strong beginning to the year for crude oil and gold. Correction risks lurk, however, with oil potentially at risk

Gold consolidating with eyes on JPY and US yields
Gold has spent the past week consolidating the strong gains made during the second half of December. The potential negative impact of rising US bond yields and China trying to orchestrate a stronger dollar has so far been cushioned by a stronger yen on speculation of Bank of Japan tapering.

WCU: Commodities gains led by strong energy sector
The Bloomberg Energy Index reached a 10-month high as the sector continues to attract attention and demand. The approach of winter saw natural gas break out of its months-long range, while crude oil rose for a fifth consecutive week with heightened geopolitical risks being the main driver of the latest gains.

Gold trades nearly flat after one year with Trump
Gold and silver are struggling to gain any momentum, either up or down. This week marked the one-year anniversary of Donald Trump's election. Since then gold has increasingly setted into a range, pivoting around $1,250/oz, with lower highs and higher lows telling a story of a metal in need of a spark.

Oil rallies on upbeat reports from Opec and IEA —#SaxoStrats
Crude oil trades higher ahead of what is likely to be another volatile weekly status report from the EIA. Monthly oil market reports from Opec and the IEA have painted a rosier picture for oil, with demand growth rising and the global overhang of oil and fuel supplies beginning to approach the long-term trend.

COT: Metals may pause after weeks of buying — #SaxoStrats
Hedge funds were broad-based buyers of commodities in the week to September 5. The aftermath of hurricane Harvey gave energy futures a boost, while precious and industrial metals remained in demand. The agricultural sector was mixed, with corn and wheat sold ahead of the WASDE report, while risk of hurricane damage lifted cotton and sugar.

COT: IMM euro long hit 10-year high before ECB meeting — #SaxoStrats
The non-commercial dollar short against eight IMM currency futures increased further before a renewed dollar slump last Thursday when the European Central Bank failed to halt the month-long rally in the euro. Buying of euros and Mexican pesos more than offset renewed selling of the yen and some light profit-taking in the Aussie and kiwi dollars. The IMM euro net long hit a 10-year high.
