  • Contador defends pink jersey, extends lead
  • Hot weather, difficult roads contributing to a nervous stage
  • Richie Porte losing 2'47" after  mechanical in stage finale

Flat but challenging

The Giro D'Italia 10th stage yesterday was  a day of tough riding conditions despite flat terrain. Alberto Contador – the man in the pink jersey – said that the stage had been very fast requiring attentive riding from the team with the effect of 200km being felt in the legs.

Sports Director Steven De Jongh adds: “It’s always hard with a fast stage right after a rest day. We had tailwind and high speed and it was hot as well. Combined with lots of roundabouts, these factors made the stage pretty nervous. So I wouldn’t say that it was comfortable for the guys today”.

The teams took control after the break grew to above two and a half minutes. Tinkoff-Saxo's focus was on taking care of Alberto and making sure that he remained safe in the peloton until the finish line.

Extending the lead

Richie Porte – the Australian rider from team Sky – was hit by bad luck as a puncture in the stage finale, setting him back 47 seconds resulting in a subsequent time penalty of 2 minutes.

On the subject of his extended lead, Contador said: "There’s never an easy day and like Richie Porte’s situation today things can go wrong. Everything is possible and the best case on a stage like this is not to have bad luck. It’s something we repeat every time but it’s true that you can have a puncture or a crash on every stage. I’ve had my bad moment and now Richie had his bad moment today.”

During Monday's press conference Contador mentioned Porte as one of his main rivals in the mountains and the question everybody is asking now is whether Porte will be able to make up for lost time to once again threaten Contador for the pink jersey.
