On the road to recovery

Following a light recovery ride on the time trial bikes with his team mates, Alberto Contador made alterations to his bike's handlebar width so as to ease the pressure on the shoulder he injured in his recent crash

The individual time-trials are taking place this Saturday at the 14th stage of the Giro D'Italia where riders descend on the 59.4km route from Deviso to Valdobbiadene.

On the state of his legs and in particular his knee after the accident, Contador said: “After the crash, I have been more conservative instead of attacking on the stage to Campitello Matese. Finishing these stages without losing time was good for me, because there is still more than enough terrain ahead. In this situation I preferred to be conservative”.

"it's almost impossible for me to have more motivation. I have worked hard for this, I have prepared not only physically, but also mentally… we'll see if I can do it”.

Satisfied with performance thus far

Contador said he feels he's been getting better every day following the crash with cadence (revolutions per minute) returning to normal. Regarding his position in the race, he said: "As for my situation in the general classification, I am also happy. I'm ahead of my rivals and they have to move, although it is true that the Giro has only just begun”.

“Even though there haven’t been very tough finales, the first week was very demanding, the peloton has suffered and now it seems as if there’s is a period of relaxation, but we must remain attentive every day and above all save strength for the time trial”.

Assessing the competition

When asked about his strongest opponents, Contador said that Fabio Aru (Astana) and Richie Porte (Team Sky) are his main rivals as their ideal terrain is the same as his –  high mountains.

“The jersey can be lost on all stages, as we saw the other day, but we have to see what happens in the time trial, because Richie Porte is very strong there. Maybe this year, this tradition might not continue, but there are a lot of stages where I could regain it again, if I lose it. In any case, this is just statistics”.

Wishing riders and managers good luck and good legs in days to come.

Sagan rode brilliantly winning GC by 1 second and it was a photo finish on the final day for him !! Who would have thought a sprinter would excel at a mountain stage and a time trial and totally leave his own team behind in his wake. Contador in the Giro is the same he can totally outclass his own team with a reputation of strength and unbelievable drive to win even when he breaks his leg (tdF 2014) or the injuries of this year. Tinkoff Saxo are back on form :-)
