Saxo Bank to launch stock options trading

Co-founder and CEO / Saxo Bank A/S
Denmark

On April 30, Saxo Bank will launch stock options trading on our multi-asset platform. This is an ambitious project that has taken the bank a few years to develop. It is also the single largest request that we have received from our direct, institutional and White Label clients.

Once again, it is always at the forefront of our priorities to listen to and meet the requirements and needs of our clients. Listing all the major stock options exchanges, in addition to our existing extensive range of globally available markets, will really open up opportunities, especially for equity investors and traders.

Stock options

Saxo Bank will be launching stock options trading on April 1.

So why are stock options so important?

To Saxo Bank, the answer is simple. Options traders are always seeking opportunity, albeit whether the market is bullish, bearish or simply standing still. The maturity of the options market and range of equities available ensure that stock options also have considerable liquidity to support efficient pricing, also well into the future.

Some believe that options are too complex, and therefore too risky, for many investors.

It is always good to know and understand what products you decide to trade, but options are used not only to find opportunity in risky assets, but many use options to reduce risk on their equity portfolio and also enhance the overall yield through cover call writing and dividend extraction strategies.

Saxo Bank offers multi-asset trading from one account, providing traders with access to the ultimate form of sophistication in market access, yet giving our clients easy access with a user-friendly experience. In fact, we have had clients trading stock options in beta mode since the beginning of the year and we are now ready to move to the next level.

With that in mind, we would like to invite interested stock options traders to join our beta platform now and be a part the most comprehensive equities (FX, commodities and fixed Income, too) offering from one account. Simply email Patrice Henault, the product manager, at PHE@saxobank.com if you are interested in signing up.

In the meantime, many of you would have noticed by now that some major updates were introduced to the new TradingFloor.com last week, including the ability to sign in to the platform via social media platforms.

This is an important feature for the new site and has been eagerly awaited by many of our members, who will, once again, be able to share analysis and views by their favourite writers and Trade View contributors.

Options are amazing....the ''trick'' is to do the maths first before entering any format of option trade. Rarely do I find the best trade is a vanilla call or put. But you quickly establish a favourite trading style/standard for most mkt conditions and discipline in option trading is far easier imho.

Finally, great news! Don't need to open an account in IB and don't need to trade dodgy covered warrants any more. Also like to see the greeks on the individual strike prices like in all the US platforms. Any change to get Nokia on the stock options selection?

Macro may I suggest avoiding covered warrants....dreadful strike prices, dreadful volume and the paucity of service is unbelievable imho grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Saxo advised when launching stock Options, the top 30 Australian optionable stocks would be available - I'm still waiting. When will this become available?

Clare MacCarthy Clare MacCarthy
Dear David, Due to local regulation we won’t, unfortunately, be able to list ASX options on our platforms before mid-2015. We’ll get back to you with the exact launch date in due course. Best regards, Clare/TradingFloor.com

Hi Clare, thanks for the update. It would be good if Saxo can provide a better options trade ticket where you can place options strategies together (covered calls, spreads, iron condors etc.) and enter based on credit limit, debit limit, price of the underlying and at particular times (eg. last hour of trading, after opening hour etc.) See OptionsXpress all-in-one ticket for more information.

Hi Clare, is there any update as to when ASX Stock options will be available?

Now we can't put a stop order on an options trade! This goes against all the rules of trading - always use a stop. Saxo now promotes bad practices - just give up Saxo you are obviously not serious about offering options.

Patrice Henault Patrice Henault
Dear David, Stop orders are triggered if a minimum trade of one lot in the instrument is traded in the market. As option prices are calculated on the underlying stock or futures price so the price can reach the stop price but not be triggered as no one is actually trading at that price (for that strike and expiry). To avoid unexpected trading behaviour, Saxo Bank is removing all Stop order types (stops and trailing stops) on all ETOs (stock options, futures options and index options) from December 12th. ETOs will then only be tradable using market and limit orders.

After the close (NYSE) on Friday 11th December, existing stop orders on ETOs will be cancelled.

We will reintroduce Stop order on ETOs with a better client experience in 2016.
