The future of Facebook will be focused on private, ephemeral and encrypted communication, Mark Zuckerberg said in a 3,200-word blog post. The social network's CEO announced the company would rebuild many of its products as more users prefer interacting in intimate groups, instead of in "the digital equivalent of a town square."
“Frankly, we don’t currently have a strong reputation for building privacy…but we’ve repeatedly shown that we can evolve to build the services that people really want,” Zuckerberg said.
He added Facebook’s move to encrypted messaging could be safer for government dissidents and others with controversial views.
“Of course, this would be opt-in and you will be able to keep your accounts separate if you’d like,” Zuckerberg wrote.
