#SaxoStrats: Garnry looking for upside in Telefonica

    Peter Garnry
Saxo Bank head of equity strategy Peter Garnry is adding Telefonica to the SaxoStrats equity portfolio.

Recent news about Telefonica pursuing an IPO for its mobile carrier O2 and stable ratings could spell further upside, according to Garnry.

He is buying Telefonica with a stop-loss at €9 and a price target of €10.

    Telecom mergers surge, prices fall

    Bloombergview
Amid falling per-customer-revenue telecom companies are eager to increase market share by arranging mergers. Hong Kong's Hutchison Whampoa buys Telefonica's UK business (branded O 2), O 2 Germany earlier bought E-Plus and in the Nordics Swedish-Finnish TeliaSonera is adding competitors to its businesses in Denmark and Norway. This merger-trend will continue, probably also in the US. Decreasing competition usually is a bad thing for customers. However, prices for telecom services have been falling heavily in recent years and will continue to do so, possibly leading to even more mergers because of falling per-customer-revenue (see above).

The German Dax is still struggling to overcome resistance while better opportunities are being found in Spain, Italy and even Switzerland, particularly on the single stock front.

Still a tricky tape, although yesterday's bottom building in the US markets looks promising for a bounce.
