A sweet crystal like substance primarily made out of sugar cane or sugar beets. It tends to be white when refined and more brown when less refined. Sugar cane was a native plant of tropical South Asia and Southeast Asia and for centuries people from this region used to chew it. In its refined form it is a product that is used in many common processed foods and alcohol. In recent years it has been used to produce bio-fuels in the form of sugar cane ethanol. Brazil and the Ukraine are the largest producers in the world.
