Cocoa is a powder made from roasted, husked, and ground seeds or cocoa beans contained in pods which grow on the tropical cacao tree. Cocoa beans are used to make chocolate and cocoa powder (two-thirds for chocolate and one-third for cocoa powder). Each pod has 30 to 40 cocoa beans and it takes about 400 beans to make one pound of chocolate. Demand for chocolate creates demand for cocoa. Cocoa is mainly produced in Africa - specifically in the Ivory Coast and Ghana, but also Indonesia. The majority of chocolate is consumed in Europe. A cacao tree takes about five years to reach maturity and can live for up to 50 years.
